the persistence of femenine image
2009 - 2015

I painted these women out of affection or admiration, but also to learn pictorial solutions for the human figure, in a daily coexistence with the material, practice and patience. I constantly returned to contemporary portraitists such as Jenny Saville, Lynette Yiadom-Boakye, Paula Rego, Marlene Dumas or Mickalene Thomas; struggling in a search for my own pictorial language.  During those years I understood contemporary reality and the construction of identity mediated by images as never before, particularly by digital and media images. I address intimate negotiations with femininity and its scope, which can be sensed in the wallpaper backgrounds, in the masks, reflections and ornaments; but also in the poses and gazes, sometimes artificial or seductive, most of them direct, but also problematic or even painful.
